Germany
Harbour Energy is one of the largest oil and gas producers in Germany. The company’s activities are focused on three natural gas and crude oil production sites in northern Germany: the Mittelplate crude oil field off the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein, natural gas production in a total of four districts in northwestern Lower Saxony, and oil production in Emlichheim near the German-Dutch border in the west of Lower Saxony.
Mittelplate
Mittelplate (100% operated) is the biggest oil field in Germany, accounting for more than half of all oil production in the country.
The Mittelplate field is located under the Wadden Sea, approximately seven kilometres offshore and commenced production in 1987. An artificial drilling and production island was constructed to enable production, while strict environmental and safety standards were developed. Another part of the production is carried out through highly deviated extended reach wells from onshore. The production district Holstein, based in Friedrichskoog, is responsible for the extraction and processing of the oil.
Langwedel-Holtebüttel
The Gas Nord production district based in Langwedel-Holtebüttel is responsible for the production and processing of the natural gas produced in northern Germany. The Völkersen, Bötersen and Hemsbünde natural gas fields in Lower Saxony are among the ten highest-producing fields in Germany. All natural gas produced here is consumed directly in Lower Saxony.
Emlichheim
Emlichheim (100% operated) is one of the oldest oil fields in Germany which is situated in Emlichheim on the Dutch border. The company has been recovering oil there at a consistently high level for more than 80 years. That is made possible by steam flooding, where hot steam is injected under pressure into the reservoir. The oil trapped in the rock becomes less viscous and flows more easily to the wells. In 2024, the company started to prepare the shift from steam to hot water injection for an even more efficient oil recovery. Through this project, both energy consumption and CO2 emissions at the site can be reduced significantly.
Barnstorf
The town of Barnstorf has been home to our company for over 70 years. With its Technology & Service Center, the global core storage facility and the apprentice training centre, the town in Lower Saxony is our technology and training hub in Germany. In addition, the decommissioning department in Barnstorf is dedicated to the plugging of former production wells and the abandonment and recultivation of former production facilities throughout Germany.
